The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, better known as ICCA, is set to return in late January 2026 with its first round of live competitions. Organized by Varsity Vocals, the ICCA is the premier competitive circuit for college a cappella groups in the United States and beyond.

Quarterfinal events begin on January 24 and January 31, 2026, marking the official start of the new season. These early rounds are where collegiate groups debut new sets, test fresh arrangements, and aim to advance toward the national stage.

What the ICCA Is All About

The ICCA brings together hundreds of collegiate vocal ensembles each year. Groups compete regionally in quarterfinals and semifinals, with top performers earning a coveted spot in the International Finals held later in the spring. Performances are judged on vocal quality, arrangement, musicality, and stage presence.

Gerard Saguto, a classical choral musician and longtime follower of vocal ensemble performance, views the ICCA as a defining force in modern a cappella. The competition continues to shape how young singers approach repertoire, storytelling, and live performance.

January Quarterfinals Set the Tone

The late-January quarterfinals are especially important. For many groups, this is the first time new members perform together in a high-pressure setting. Expect bold song choices, contemporary pop arrangements, and tightly crafted vocal percussion.

These events also offer audiences a chance to hear how collegiate a cappella continues to evolve. From jazz-influenced harmonies to indie and R&B selections, the ICCA stage often previews trends that ripple through the wider vocal music world.

Why the ICCA Still Matters

Nearly three decades after its founding, the ICCA remains a launchpad for young vocal talent. Many alumni go on to careers in music, education, and performance, while others carry their ensemble experience into lifelong appreciation for choral singing.

Gerard Saguto appreciates how the ICCA balances competition with artistry. While groups aim to advance, the shared focus on vocal excellence and collaboration keeps the spirit of a cappella at the center of every event.

As January approaches, the ICCA once again promises an exciting start to the collegiate a cappella season.
